## About the Role
Cockroach Labs is hiring a Senior Technical Program Manager, FinOps for its R&D Operations team in Bengaluru, India. This role is responsible for helping shape cloud financial management across Engineering, Finance, and Operations, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and measurable savings.
The position supports the cloud infrastructure behind CockroachDB Cloud and internal engineering environments. It owns the FinOps program end to end, including the tooling used to track cloud costs, the allocation models used for margin analysis, and the operating rhythm that keeps spend under control.
Early priorities include reviewing current tagging and attribution practices, aligning on a tagging taxonomy with Finance, and setting up reporting and governance that can scale with the business. The work is intended to help teams make cost-aware decisions without reducing service quality or engineering speed.
## Key Responsibilities
– Own and improve the FinOps tooling used to track, report on, and analyze cloud spend across AWS, GCP, and other providers.
– Establish the FinOps operating cadence, including cost reviews, budget-to-actual analysis, anomaly detection, and an optimization backlog with owners and targets.
– Build cost allocation frameworks that attribute spend to products, teams, and customer workloads to support COGS, unit economics, and margin analysis.
– Identify and prioritize cloud optimization opportunities such as rightsizing, committed use discounts, idle resource cleanup, storage tiering, egress reduction, Kubernetes efficiency, and AI/ML infrastructure savings.
– Partner with Finance and Engineering leadership on budgets and forecasts, including variance explanation and early risk identification.
– Drive tagging, labeling, showback, chargeback, and cost-aware engineering practices.
– Create executive dashboards and reporting for cloud spend trends, savings, forecast performance, and optimization progress.
– Work cross-functionally with Engineering, Infrastructure, Procurement, and Finance on cost reduction initiatives, roadmap priorities, and business goals.
– Define scalable FinOps governance, policies, vendor discount strategy, commitment management, and cloud budget controls.
## Required Skills
– 8+ years of experience in program management, cloud financial management, or a related field, with proven success leading complex cross-functional work independently.
– Production-grade experience with a dedicated FinOps platform, specifically CloudZero, Vantage, or Finout.
– Proficiency with native cloud cost tools, including AWS Cost Explorer / Cost & Usage Reports, GCP Billing, and Azure Cost Management.
– Hands-on experience with budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and cost allocation methods such as showback, chargeback, and COGS/margin attribution.
– Strong understanding of cloud pricing models, including committed use discounts, reserved instances, savings plans, spot/preemptible pricing, egress costs, storage tiers, and managed service pricing.
– Ability to build or mature cost allocation frameworks for shared infrastructure spend in support of gross margin analysis.
– Experience working with large billing datasets and building BI dashboards in Looker, Tableau, Quicksight, or similar tools.
– Strong cross-functional influence skills, including the ability to drive governance and culture change without direct authority.
– Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
– Demonstrated use of AI tools in daily work across research, drafting, analysis, and planning.
## Preferred Skills
– FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) or higher, such as FinOps Certified Professional.
– Cloud certifications in AWS, GCP, or Azure.
– Familiarity with the FinOps for AI framework.
– Experience building or maturing a FinOps practice.
– Experience extending cost governance into AI and machine learning infrastructure.
