# Job Title: Director of FP&A, R&D
## About the Role
The Director of FP&A for Research and Development (R&D) serves as the strategic finance partner to the Engineering, Product, and Data/ML leadership teams. This position oversees the R&D operating plan and establishes financial discipline in managing costs associated with AI in production. The role is essential in ensuring efficiency in R&D operations by engaging closely with our data stack, specifically utilizing tools such as BigQuery and dbt.
This role collaborates with multiple teams to analyze and influence key financial decisions regarding build-vs-buy strategies, pricing, and infrastructure. Additionally, the Director disseminates comprehensive reports and variance commentary to the CFO, FP&A leadership, and board members, playing a critical role in driving the budget, forecasting, and headcount planning for the Engineering, Product, and Data/ML teams.
## Key Responsibilities
– Partner with engineering, product, and data leaders as their trusted finance counterpart.
– Conduct analyses informing build-vs-buy, pricing, and infrastructure decisions.
– Support negotiations with cloud vendors and foundation-model contracts using data-driven insights.
– Provide clear financial reports and variance analyses to stakeholders, including the CFO and board.
– Own the R&D budget, forecasting, and headcount planning; ensure alignment with organizational priorities.
– Track costs related to LLM/inference and cloud compute, integrating these metrics into daily operations.
– Analyze the impact of R&D expenditures on the P&L, including gross margins and unit economics.
– Contribute financial rigor to major R&D spending decisions and negotiations.
## Required Skills
– At least 8 years of experience in FP&A or corporate finance, with a focus on R&D or technical/product organizations.
– Strong understanding of SaaS and AI economics, including Cost of Revenue (CoR) and unit economics.
– Proficient in SQL (BigQuery preferred) and advanced Excel/Sheets modeling.
– Knowledge of R&D spending flow through the Profit & Loss (P&L) statement.
– Strong interpersonal skills to engage with technical leaders and facilitate financial discussions.
– Detail-oriented, self-directed, and concise in work approach.
## Preferred Skills
– Experience in a high-growth AI/ML company.
– Familiarity with modern data stacks and finance systems, including dbt and EPM tools.
– Previous experience in contract negotiations and managing teams.
– Professional designations such as CPA, CA, or CFA.
