# FinOps Engineer
## About the Role
Technology spend is increasingly spread across cloud, SaaS, licensing, on-premises infrastructure, and shared services. In this role, you will bring structure and transparency to that spend, helping the business move from reactive cost control to proactive, data-driven governance.
You will sit between Engineering and Finance, building the models, reporting, and controls behind budgeting, forecasting, allocation, and optimisation. The goal is to make spending visible, understandable, and actionable, while giving teams the insight they need to make cost-aware decisions. Outputs from analysis and AI-assisted work remain reviewable, with Finance and technology leaders retaining accountability for material decisions.
## Key Responsibilities
– Own budgeting, forecasting, and spend governance across cloud, SaaS, software licensing, on-premises infrastructure, and managed services.
– Track actual spend against budget, explain variances and cost drivers, and flag financial risks or unexpected increases early.
– Build allocation models for showback and chargeback, including ownership, tagging, and allocation standards.
– Create dashboards, reporting, and financial insight to improve visibility into technology consumption and spend.
– Drive cost-optimisation work across cloud platforms, SaaS, software licensing, and on-premises infrastructure.
– Support software asset management, including licence utilisation, renewals, compliance, and vendor-audit readiness.
– Provide financial analysis to support vendor reviews, renewal planning, and commercial discussions.
– Run regular cost reviews with stakeholders and improve technology financial governance over time.
– Investigate unusual spending patterns, identify affected stakeholders, and help bring spend back on track.
## Required Skills
– 3+ years of experience in FinOps, IT Financial Management, Technology Asset Management, or Technology Finance.
– Experience with budgeting, forecasting, analysis, financial reporting, and cost allocation.
– Strong understanding of cloud platforms and cloud pricing models.
– Strong analytical skills and the ability to turn data into actionable insight.
– Hands-on data skills, including SQL or similar analysis tools, and experience building repeatable analytical or reporting mechanisms.
– Experience working with multiple stakeholders across technology and business functions.
– Clear communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
## Preferred Skills
– FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) and/or FinOps Certified Engineer (FCE).
– Experience with Azure Cost Management, Archera, or similar tools.
– Knowledge of software asset management and licensing models.
– Experience supporting vendor management and contract-renewal processes.

## Why You Might Be Interested
This role brings together FinOps, technology finance, and software asset management across a broad technology spend surface. It offers ownership of the models and governance behind spend visibility, forecasting, allocation, and optimisation rather than reporting alone. You will work closely with Engineering and Finance, with opportunities to influence decisions through SQL-based analysis, dashboards, and automation. The environment also includes Azure at scale and practical use of Claude and agents for analysis and workflow support.
