# About the Role
HMH is hiring a Director of FinOps to build and lead an enterprise cloud financial management capability focused on recurring technology spend. Reporting to the CIO organization, this role is responsible for creating visibility and control across Cloud, AI, SaaS, data, observability, security tooling, and other material technology services.
The position exists to help technology and business leaders understand how usage, demand, contracts, and commercial decisions affect spend. The Director will work closely with Budget Owners, Contract Owners, Finance, Procurement, Vendor Management, Engineering, and Architecture to improve forecasting, identify optimization opportunities, and support better investment and sourcing decisions.
This is a leadership role centered on financial intelligence, governance, and operating cadence rather than cloud engineering. HMH operates in a hybrid environment today and is moving toward greater use of AWS, so the role also supports current-state run-rate management and migration economics.
# Key Responsibilities
– Own consolidated visibility into recurring technology spend across Cloud, AI, SaaS, and other significant technology services.
– Build and mature the FinOps operating model, including governance, standards, accountability, allocation, tagging, showback, forecasting, and optimization tracking.
– Run a regular review cadence with Budget Owners to analyze actuals, forecasts, variances, demand shifts, and corrective actions.
– Partner with Contract Owners, Procurement, Vendor Management, and Finance to connect utilization data with renewals, pricing, commitments, and sourcing decisions.
– Identify and assess cloud cost optimization opportunities such as rightsizing, idle resource reduction, storage and database optimization, commitment utilization, and platform consolidation.
– Develop visibility into AI consumption, including model and API usage, tokens, agent execution, licensing, GPU or compute consumption, and other material AI services.
– Build visibility into SaaS spend, license utilization, product tiers, overlapping capabilities, contract commitments, and renewal timing.
– Lead forecasting, budgeting support, and scenario planning for technology run-rate spend.
– Maintain an optimization pipeline from opportunity identification through owner assignment, implementation, and validated financial realization.
– Provide the CIO and Technology Leadership Team with clear reporting, analysis, and recommendations on run-rate, savings, commitments, utilization, and financial risks.
# Required Skills
– 8+ years of relevant experience in FinOps, Cloud Financial Management, TBM, technology finance, financial analytics, SaaS economics, or a related field.
– Experience leading or operating a FinOps or technology cost management capability at meaningful scale.
– Demonstrated experience with forecasting, budgeting support, cost allocation, optimization, commitment management, variance analysis, and savings realization.
– Experience working with Budget Owners, Contract Owners, Finance, FP&A, Procurement, Vendor Management, and technology teams.
– Working knowledge of FinOps platforms such as Finout, CloudZero, Apptio Cloudability, CloudHealth, Harness, Kubecost, or similar tools.
– Strong analytical skills with cloud billing, SaaS licensing, contract, utilization, and related consumption data.
– Ability to translate technical and financial information into practical recommendations and executive-level insights.
– Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
– Working knowledge of public cloud economics and commercial models, especially AWS.
– Familiarity with at least one additional major cloud platform.
– Understanding of how cloud architecture, engineering practices, AI adoption, SaaS usage, and technology demand influence cost.
– Comfort working with technical teams and interpreting consumption data without being responsible for architecture or engineering design.
– Familiarity with AI consumption models, including APIs, tokens, models, agents, platform licenses, and compute-intensive workloads.
– Proficiency with analytical and reporting tools such as Power BI, Tableau, SQL, Python, and APIs, or comparable technologies.
– Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Business, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
# Preferred Skills
– FinOps Foundation certification.
– Relevant AWS, Azure, or GCP credentials.
– Experience managing or analyzing generative AI costs, AI API and token economics, AI platform licensing, GPU infrastructure, or agentic workloads.
– SaaS optimization, software asset economics, license rationalization, or technology vendor negotiation experience.
– Experience with cloud commitments such as Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, committed-use agreements, enterprise discounts, or marketplace consumption.
– Migration economics experience, including modeling the financial impact of moving workloads from data centers to public cloud.
– Experience establishing unit economics for large digital products or technology platforms.
– TBM or technology portfolio management experience in a sizable enterprise technology organization.
