FinOps Engineer – Cloud Financial Optimisation
Own cloud cost intelligence for a platform operating at a real global scale
A hands-on engineering role where your impact shows up directly on the balance sheet
Bridge the gap between infrastructure, data, and financial decision-making
This is not a governance role with a few dashboards bolted on. This is an engineering position with a financial mandate, and that distinction is important. You will be working directly with compute, containers, databases, and storage on Google Cloud — identifying inefficiency, right-sizing workloads, locking in committed use discounts, and building the automation that keeps costs in check as the platform grows.
At the same time, you will construct the forecasting models, cost visibility tooling, and operating rhythms that give engineering leads and Finance the confidence to make informed decisions — not just at month end, but continuously.
The platform already operates at significant cloud scale. The shift now is from reactive cost awareness to proactive financial engineering, and from individual savings to a culture where engineers genuinely understand the cost dimension of what they build and ship.
You will be the person who makes that shift happen, embedded within the SRE team, but working hand in hand with Product Engineering and Finance every day.
If you are a technically grounded SRE or DevOps engineer who has delivered real, measurable FinOps outcomes, not just pretty charts, this role was written for you.
The Role:
Building and owning a single source of truth for cloud cost and usage across GCP
Designing and driving the adoption of a consistent resource labelling and tagging
Implementing budget controls and alerting across all projects with clearly defined ownership and escalation paths
Maximising Committed Use Discounts on stable workloads and right-sizing resources
Identifying idle and orphaned resources and eliminating waste through Cloud Functions and scripting automation
Building rolling 12–18 month cost forecasts tied to business drivers and owning variance analysis at monthly close
Translating raw cloud consumption data into business-meaningful metrics and partnering with Finance on accruals and planning
Leading a monthly Cloud Cost Review with tech leads and budget owners, tracking actions through to resolution
Championing FinOps principles across engineering teams and contributing to SRE runbooks and shared standards
Skills / Experience Required:
A strong SRE or DevOps foundation with hands-on experience across major cloud platforms. GCP experience is particularly valued
A genuine FinOps track record at meaningful scale, with concrete savings you can speak to confidently
Practical optimisation experience spanning compute, containers, databases, and storage
Strong automation and data engineering skills, including solid Python proficiency
The ability to influence engineering and finance stakeholders without relying on direct authority
Clear, credible communication across both technical and financial audiences
FinOps Certified Practitioner or Analyst certification is a plus, as is familiarity with GKE autoscaling, Cloud SQL Enterprise, and infrastructure-as-code tooling
What’s on Offer:
Competitive salary and benefits package
Enhanced annual leave plus dedicated wellbeing days each year
Paid family leave covering maternity, paternity, surrogacy, and adoption
Remote working with access to an office hub for in-person collaboration when you want it
Ongoing learning and development investment with real scope to grow
