## About the Role
OpenAI’s Strategic Finance organization supports long-term strategy and growth by turning financial data into decision support. Within that group, the Applications Technology Strategic Finance team partners with Product and Engineering to scale core offerings, launch new products, and manage revenue forecasting, performance, infrastructure demand, margin targets, and headcount planning.
The Director of Product Finance, Infrastructure and Compute Demand will be the primary finance partner to the AGI Deployment (Applications) Infrastructure Engineering organization. This role connects product usage, compute demand, infrastructure costs, and margin outcomes, and helps translate technical decisions into financial outcomes across the portfolio.
You will also manage a small team while staying close to analysis and execution. The role is ideally based in San Francisco, with New York City and Seattle also considered. OpenAI uses a hybrid model of three days per week in the office and offers relocation assistance for new employees.
## Key Responsibilities
– Serve as the main finance partner to the AGI Deployment (Applications) Infrastructure Engineering organization.
– Own the consolidated forecast for compute and infrastructure demand across products brought to market.
– Work with capacity planning and supply teams to inform compute planning and allocation decisions.
– Analyze the tradeoffs between customer experience, growth, and profitability, including the impact of latency, throughput, and token usage on margin.
– Build frameworks to evaluate ROI on compute and infrastructure spend across products, features, and user segments.
– Use those frameworks to guide investment and optimization decisions.
– Establish a durable cross-functional forum for compute economics across product, infrastructure, capacity planning, and finance.
– Prepare materials for executive and Board-level discussions.
– Manage and mentor a small team while remaining hands-on with analysis and execution.
## Preferred Skills
– 12+ years of experience in investment banking, consulting, or buy-side investing, combined with operational experience at a fast-paced scaling company.
– Strong judgment in evaluating opportunities and risks in financials.
– Ability to convert complex financial data into actionable insights for leadership.
– Excellent communication skills and the ability to build compelling narratives from data.
– Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting and analysis.
– Familiarity with business models and metrics relevant to OpenAI.
– Interest in technology and artificial intelligence.
– Extensive hands-on use of AI.
## FinOps Responsibilities
– Forecast compute and infrastructure demand across the product portfolio.
– Partner with capacity planning and supply teams on compute planning and allocation.
– Connect product usage and technical performance drivers to margin outcomes.
– Build ROI frameworks for compute and infrastructure spend by product, feature, and user segment.
– Support investment and optimization decisions tied to allocation, utilization, and margin tradeoffs.
– Create a cross-functional governance forum for compute economics.
– Prepare executive- and Board-level reporting on compute economics.
