## About the Role
Koniag IT Systems, LLC, a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking a Financial Operations Engineer to support KITS and a government customer in a remote capacity. This is a hands-on AWS FinOps role focused on helping teams understand, manage, and optimize cloud spend while maintaining performance, reliability, and security.
The position is designed for someone who can turn AWS usage data into clear financial insight. You will build the dashboards, automation, reporting, and governance needed to support cost-conscious cloud delivery across engineering, finance, and leadership stakeholders.
You will work closely with engineering and finance partners to analyze spend, forecast usage, improve cost allocation, and establish FinOps best practices across the organization.
## Key Responsibilities
– Analyze and monitor AWS spend using tools such as Cost Explorer, Cost and Usage Reports (CUR), Cost Optimization Hub, Budgets, Trusted Advisor, and third-party platforms including CloudHealth, Cloudability, or CloudZero.
– Identify waste across compute, storage, networking, databases, and managed services, and quantify the savings opportunities.
– Manage Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, and Spot usage to improve commitment efficiency and utilization.
– Build and maintain dashboards, executive summaries, and showback/chargeback reporting for engineering, finance, and leadership.
– Develop forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis in partnership with Finance.
– Set up cost anomaly detection, alerting, investigation, and remediation workflows.
– Design and enforce tagging standards and account structures to improve cost allocation.
– Automate rightsizing, scheduling, tag compliance, and budget guardrails using infrastructure-as-code and scripting.
– Integrate cost controls and checks into CI/CD pipelines.
– Advise engineering teams on cost-efficient architecture choices across Kubernetes/EKS, containers, and serverless environments.
– Define FinOps KPIs, facilitate stakeholder reviews, and produce training and documentation to strengthen FinOps practices.
## Required Skills
– 5+ years of experience in cloud cost optimization, FinOps, or cloud engineering, with a strong focus on AWS.
– Deep understanding of AWS pricing and billing models, including the cost drivers for EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, EKS, and data transfer.
– Hands-on experience with AWS cost tools such as Cost Explorer, CUR, and Budgets.
– Experience with at least one FinOps platform or BI tool.
– Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
– Scripting experience in Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
– Ability to translate technical usage into financial insight and communicate with both engineers and finance leaders.
– Working knowledge of FinOps principles and the Inform, Optimize, Operate lifecycle.
– Proven experience with machine learning and statistical modeling.
– Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
– Strong analytical and data-driven mindset with financial modeling instincts.
– Ability to influence without authority and build trust across engineering and finance.
– Clear written and verbal communication skills.
– Ability to balance cost efficiency with reliability, performance, and delivery speed.
– Self-directed approach and comfort operating in ambiguity.
## Preferred Skills
– Master’s degree in a quantitative or technical field.
– FinOps Certified Practitioner or higher.
– AWS certifications such as Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect, or DevOps Engineer.
– Familiarity with the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS).
– Experience with Kubernetes cost allocation and optimization, including EKS and Kubecost.
– Experience with multi-account governance at scale.
– Experience with multi-cloud cost management, including Azure and GCP.
– SQL and data analysis skills, such as Athena over CUR data.
– Experience building financial or forecasting models.
– Experience embedding cost awareness into DevOps or CI/CD workflows.
– Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams.
– Experience establishing or maturing a FinOps practice.
